A look at the latest Syria developments

BEIRUT (AP) ? Here are the latest developments in the Syria crisis:

? Syria's foreign minister and the main Western-backed opposition group issue terms that would make it difficult for U.S.-Russian sponsored peace talks on ending Syria's civil war to succeed. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem insists Bashar Assad will remain Syria's president at least until elections in 2014. He says that any deal reached in the proposed Geneva conference would have to be put to a referendum at home. The opposition Syrian National Coalition demands weapons and international guarantees that Assad would step down ahead of any talks.

? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says Syria is "disintegrating" and urges international support for the U.S.-Russian talks initiative.

? The U.S., Turkey and Qatar push through a U.N. resolution demanding an inquiry into the fighting around the Syrian town of Qusair, near Lebanon, and condemnation of foreign fighters supporting Assad. The resolution, approved by a vote of 36-1 in the U.N. Human Rights Council, calls for urgent investigation into alleged abuses by government forces and Hezbollah fighters in Qusair. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says Syria's civil war is "spilling out of control" and represents a failure to protect citizens against war crimes and crimes against humanity that are now routine.

? Britain sends a letter to the U.N.'s Ban with new information on three further incidents of alleged chemical weapons use by the Syrian government.

? Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says Tehran supports an international conference to end the bloodshed in Syria. His remarks reflect an attempt by Iran to angle for a role in the negotiations on resolving the conflict. He spoke as representatives from 40 different countries, including Russia and China, met in Tehran to discuss Syria.

? Syria-based activist groups accuse Syrian National Coalition of failing the Syrian people and threaten to withdraw its support if its leaders don't come up with a joint strategy. The Coalition has been meeting for days in Istanbul but has failed to agree on several issues, including on whether to attend talks in Geneva with representatives of Assad's regime.

? A Jordanian official says nearly 60,000 Syrian refugees have left the kingdom to go back home, some to fight Assad's regime and others because living conditions in their camp have become too difficult.

? Lebanon's parliament moves to extend its term, skipping scheduled elections because of the country's deteriorating security linked to the civil war in Syria next door.

Cockroaches Are Evolving to Avoid Poison, Will Rule Us All

Think twice before stomping the lights out of the next cockroach you come across?you're going to want them to return the favor after the takeover. Thanks to new research on this most vexatious blight of mankind, we can now say more or less definitively that the despised cockroach will, in fact, come to rule us all. Because, apparently, they're developing the ability to outsmart our attempts at poisoning them dead.

Brad Pitt 'quite emotional' over Jolie's surgery

Celebs

On Tuesday, Angelina Jolie announced she had preventive double mastectomy after being identified as the carrier of a gene that gave her a high probability of breast cancer; today, the reactions are wide and varied -- with her fiance Brad Pitt telling USA Today that he was "quite emotional about it, of course." But she may not be done with her medical procedures yet.

"She could have stayed absolutely private about it and I don't think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results," Pitt told the newspaper. "But it was really important to her to share the story and that others would understand it doesn't have to be a scary thing. In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger."

He revealed that for the past two months, Jolie was still taking care of her responsibilities and making appearances around the world, despite the surgery. "This was during Stage 2 (the double mastectomy)," he said. "Literally it was just weeks after she'd had truly major surgery."

Meanwhile, People magazine is now reporting that Jolie is planning further surgery, to remove her ovaries. Jolie's mother Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer at 56, and doctors told Jolie she had a high likelihood of contracting that disease as well.

Jolie's mother might have been her inspiration for her surgery, but her father Jon Voight (who, over the years has had a contentious relationship with Jolie) found out when nearly everyone else did -- when Jolie's firsthand account appeared in the New York Times on Tuesday.

Regardless, Voight told the New York Daily News that he respected her decision.

"My love and admiration for my daughter can't be explained in words," he said. "I saw her two days ago with my son Jamie. We all got together for his birthday, with her and Brad. But I didn't know. It wasn't obvious at all. I found out (Tuesday) morning. I was as surprised as anyone and deeply moved by the way she?s handled this."

He added, "I completely understand" her need for privacy. "I want the focus to be on the inspiration."

Back home, Pitt said he and the kids did their best to make Jolie's recovery easy and even enjoyable. "We set up our own little post-op recovery that became pretty fun. You make an adventure out of it," he said.

In the end, Pitt says he's happy that they've faced potential tragedy head-on, and have come out the other side. The experience, he said was "an emotional and beautifully inspiring few months. And I'll tell you, it's such a wonderful relief to come through this and not have a specter hanging over our heads. To know that that's not going to be something that's going to affect us. My most proudest thing is our family. This isn't going to get that."

Toshiba Kirabook

The Toshiba Kirabook ($1,999.99) is a high-end ultrabook cut from the same cloth as the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display) and the Google ChromeBook Pixel. All three are ultraportable laptops with higher than 1080p HD screens. All three will give you the visual fireworks, though the Kirabook has the lock on thinness and lightness. That said, the Kirabook is really pricey for an ultrabook, and while the screen and other features will wow you, the $2,000 price tag puts a serious damper on things. It's a really nice laptop, but not necessarily $2,000 worth of nice.

Design and Features
The Kirabook is a slim, svelte ultrabook that measures about 0.7 by 12.5 by 8.25 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.77 pounds. This is measurably thicker than the 0.47 inch thick Acer Aspire S7-391-9886 ($1,649), and the Kirabook is imperceptibly lighter than the 2.86-pound Acer S7-391. The Kirabook will fit into most travel bags easily, and with its magnesium alloy exterior and Corning Concore glass screen, you won't have to worry about the occasional drop while it's in that bag.

The top lid has a brushed metal finish, while the bottom lid is matte. The keyboard deck has a matching brushed metal finish to it, with a wide one-piece trackpad ringed by a chrome insert. Toshiba has gone minimal with the Kirabook, since the only visible embellishments are the LED ring around the power button and the adjacent single LED to tell you that Wi-Fi is on. There's a charging indicator LED on the left side of the system as well. The sides of the system house the system's three USB 3.0 ports (two left, one right), HDMI-out port, SD card reader, and headset jack. The USB ports are black instead of the more common blue, but that is OK, since there aren't any USB 2.0 ports to confuse the user. This is where the Kirabook's extra girth comes in handy: you won't need an adapter to use the full sized HDMI port, unlike Micro-HDMI on the slimmer Acer Aspire S7-391. The Acer S7-391also has one less USB port than the Kirabook. The Kirabook has a backlit keyboard. The row of function keys above the numbers default to their more usable functions (e.g., volume, play/FF/REW, etc.) rather than F1-F12, which makes more sense for most users. There are a few keys smaller than standard, like PgUP/PgDN, but on the whole the keyboard is comfortable, even with its slightly shallow keystroke.

The Kirabook's 13.3-inch screen is its centerpiece, coming in at a brilliant 2,560 by 1,440 resolution. This is a claimed 221 pixels per inch (ppi), about the same as the 220-ppi Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Retina Display) ($2,199), but a smidge lower than the 239-ppi Google ChromeBook Pixel. The screen looked great when we played 4k QFHD (3,840 by 2,160) videos streamed from the Internet, though it's notable that these videos took quite some time to buffer, even over a 40Mbit FIOS connection. Viewing 1080p streaming videos from Amazon and Netflix looked fine as well, though of course without the eye-popping detail that you'd see in 4k. The strength of the 2,560 by 1,440 display comes into play when you use the system for editing photos and videos, since you can concentrate on large swaths of a 12-megapixel image without having to zoom in too far. You can also edit a 1080p HD video at full resolution even if you surround your workspace screen with a plethora of toolbars. To this end, Toshiba has included a copy of both Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. The Kirabook's screen has 10-point touch, which is a must for a Windows 8 laptop at this price.

Toshiba also includes quite a few other pre-loaded apps, including Skype, Vimeo, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon, eBay, Toshiba Book Place, and Norton Internet Security. The copy of Norton Internet Security is notable because it includes a two-year subscription, which is excellent and almost unheard of today, when 30-60 days is the norm. The Kirabook also includes two years of technical support on a specialized Platinum support plan that promises a direct line to support techs including callback service. The top of the line system we reviewed came with a 256GB SSD, plenty of space for many users. All three configurations of Kirabook come with 256GB of storage, and if you need more, it's easy to hook up a USB 3.0 drive.

There are a few drawbacks to the compact design. Though the touch screen has enough friction to avoid bouncing when you touch it , the sides of the screen have very small bezels. While this makes the system look slimmer than other touch screen systems, it also means that swipes from off screen (like the ones used by the Charm bar) can be awkward. The Kirabook also lacks 802.11ac or 5GHz 802.11 a/n Wi-Fi, being strictly limited to 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n. This isn't a huge deal for most, but if you live in a crowded neighborhood you'd want 5GHz Wi-Fi to cut through your neighbors' wireless routers. While the screen is brilliant, you may have to fiddle with zoom and screen resolution settings on older games and programs: they may not display correctly scaled up to 2,560 by 1,440.

Performance
Toshiba Kirabook Performance on the Kirabook was a mixed bag, but mostly good. The Intel Core i7-3537U processor, 8GB of memory, and 256GB SSD combined to give us an excellent 5,229 point score on PCMark7, which measures day-to-day performance. This compares well to the non-touch Asus ZenBook UX51Vz-DH71, which came in with a 4,926 point score. The Kirabook was very good, but a bit slower than the quad-core powered Asus UX51Vz-DH71 on the multimedia tests (Handbrake and Photoshop CS6).

The big performance issue for the Kirabook is its lack of discrete graphics. In order to shrink down to ultrabook standards, the Kirabook only has integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000. While HD Graphics 4000 is fine for casual and browser-based games, it can't hold a candle to the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics in the ZenBook and the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch, both of which are in the same $2,000 price league as the Kirabook. While they may not miss the GPU for its 3D gaming prowess, graphic artists and videographers will prefer to have a GPU helping them out with professional graphics apps like the full CS6 versions of Photoshop and Premiere.

The Kirabook received a passable 5 hours 50 minutes on our battery rundown test. This is an hour better than the Acer S7-391 and two hours better than the Asus UX51Vz-DH71. However, the MacBook Pro 15-inch (Retina Display) and high-end ultraportable Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display) last into the seven-hour range, so the Kirabook is good, but not the best.

And therein lies the problem: The Toshiba Kirabook is really good, but not the best for the money. If you have a need to spend $2,000 on a high-end ultraportable laptop, the Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display) will give you a higher-than-HD resolution screen, dual-band Wi-Fi, full size HDMI, 8GB of memory, 256GB Flash Storage, and similar performance with a Core i5 processor for the same $2,000 price tag. The MacBook Pro also has more battery life and forward-looking I/O ports like Thunderbolt. The Kirabook is lighter, thinner, and comes with the two-year service and support, but those aren't quite enough to unseat the MacBook Pro as the high end ultraportable EC. High-end ultrabooks like the current EC Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T ($1,199) are unfortunately in a totally different price point, and aside from the screen and its lighter weight, the Kirabook doesn't have the bang for the buck that the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A brings to the table.

Indian government investigates firms at center of global cyber heist

Security

MUMBAI/BANGALORE, May 12 (Reuters) - The Indian government's cyber watchdog is investigating how security at two companies that are part of the country's vast IT services industry was breached in a global ATM heist that saw $45 million stolen from two banks in the Middle East.

EnStage Inc, which operates from Bangalore, and ElectraCard Services, based in the Indian city of Pune, processed card payments for the two banks that were hit in the theft, several people familiar with the situation said.

"We are investigating the technical aspect," Gulshan Rai, director general of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), part of the department of electronics and information technology, told Reuters by phone on Sunday.

"What kind of breach has happened in the system, how did it happen, what processes are in place, and the entire technical aspect we will look at," he said, adding that the agency had started its investigation on Saturday.

U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday that hackers broke into two card processing companies, raising the balances and withdrawal limits on accounts that were then exploited in coordinated ATM withdrawals around the world.

The prosecutors did not name the two companies but said one was based in India and the other in the United States.

While details of what happened are still sketchy, experts said the banks could bring claims against the processing companies in court, or they could file claims with their insurers and those of the processing companies.

According to a U.S. official and a bank employee, who both spoke on condition of anonymity, ElectraCard Services was the company that processed prepaid travel cards for National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah PSC (RAKBANK). RAKBANK suffered a $5 million coordinated heist at ATMs around the world on Dec. 21 last year, according to the U.S. indictment.

In a statement on Sunday, ElectraCard, or ECS, said it had been affected by "fraud attacks" in December. It said investigations show that "PIN and Magnetic stripe data seem to have been compromised outside the ECS processing environment."

MasterCard bought a 12.5 percent stake in ElectraCard in 2010. MasterCard, the network under which the cards used in the heist were issued, has said its security was not compromised.

EnStage, which is incorporated in Cupertino, California, but has operations based in Bangalore, is the company that processed card payments for Bank of Muscat of Oman, according to a source close to Bank of Muscat. Bank of Muscat lost $40 million in a coordinated heist on Feb. 19, according to Thursday's indictment.

"Our customers were adversely affected by this sophisticated crime," EnStage CEO Govind Setlur said in a statement in the Times of India newspaper.

Additional monitoring
A statement obtained by Reuters from a company spokesman said: "Since the time the incident occurred, EnStage has retained independent security experts to analyse the intrusion and to recommend enhancements to its information security infrastructure. EnStage has implemented both these enhancements as well as additional monitoring capabilities."

Setlur was travelling and could not be reached for further comment on Sunday.

An employee at the company's office in central Bangalore who did not want to be identified said that about 250 people work in the office but did not give further details.

Bank of Muscat has not commented on the case.

Police in Pune and Bangalore did not immediately have information on the matter when reached on Sunday.

The breach in security at Indian operators is a blow to the country's multi-billion dollar information technology industry, which received about half of all outsourcing contracts in the world in 2011, according to industry data.

India-based IT vendors, who rely on the trust of global clients to handle sensitive data, are dominated by companies providing support services to the global financial industry.

Eddie Schwartz, chief information security officer for RSA Inc, a firm that helps banks fight payment card fraud, said that it is not surprising that hackers would target banks that rely on Indian firms to process transactions.

Schwartz, who is based in Washington, said there is not as much government oversight in India as there is in the United States and Western Europe.

"Hackers view India as a target. It's got a fast-moving economy, a fast-moving IT infrastructure," Schwartz said.

Cyber security experts said the global scope and speed of the $45 million bank theft was unprecedented. The global gang had operatives in 27 countries who fanned out to thousands of ATMs in a matter of hours, withdrawing money using fraudulent prepaid debit cards, according to U.S. prosecutors.

The ringleaders of the global operation were believed to be outside the United States, but U.S. prosecutors have declined to give details, citing the continuing investigation. Germany is the only other country so far to announce arrests.

ElectraCard is based in a plush office park near the airport on the outskirts of Pune, a fast-growing city in western India that is a hub for the IT and auto industries and is home to several universities. A security guard at the office park, where tenants include IBM, would not allow in a Reuters journalist without an appointment on Sunday.

Unlisted ElectraCard had a net loss of 90.2 million rupees ($1.65 million) on net sales of 535.4 million rupees for the fiscal year that ended in March 2012, a sales decline of 1.6 percent, according to a report by ratings agency Crisil.

GOP ready to push Benghazi case into 2014 and beyond

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Steady drips of information about a horrific night in Libya are fueling Republican arguments and ads designed to fire up the conservative base and undercut the Democrats' early favorite for president in 2016.

Democratic and Republican strategists sharply disagree on the issue's power to influence elections next year and beyond. But after eight months of trying, Democrats are still struggling to move past last September's terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, which killed ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Democrats insist that an independent inquiry, the dismissal of several State Department officials, and nine congressional hearings leave little new to say on the matter. But Friday turned up the sort of nuggets that feed conservative activists' belief that a major scandal may still be at hand.

Newly revealed communications show that senior State Department officials pressed for changes in the talking points that U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice used a few days after the Benghazi attacks. These senior officials expressed concerns that Congress might criticize the Obama administration for ignoring warnings of a growing threat in Libya.

The White House has insisted that it made only stylistic changes to the intelligence agency talking points, in which Rice suggested that spontaneous protests over an anti-Islamic video set off the deadly attack. The new details suggest a greater degree of political sensitivity and involvement by the White House and State Department.

Rice and others eventually acknowledged that the Benghazi assault on Sept. 11, 2012, was a premeditated terrorist attack. Republicans say her Sept. 16 televised remarks were just the start of administration efforts to mislead Americans about what happened in Libya.

The Benghazi violence was heavily politicized from the start, occurring less than two months before President Barack Obama's re-election. Moreover, the secretary of state at the time was Hillary Rodham Clinton. The former senator and first lady infuriates many conservatives and ranks high in speculation about the Democrats' 2016 presidential nominee.

Friday brought another round of conservative broadsides against Clinton, Obama and the administration's handling of the Benghazi matter. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a possible Republican presidential contender, wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Times restating his view that Obama should have fired Clinton.

Campaigning later in Iowa, Paul said he thinks the Benghazi affair "precludes Hillary Clinton from ever holding office."

The conservative group American Crossroads released a 90-second video asking if Clinton was "part of a cover-up." The video, like emails and letters from several other groups, asked for political donations.

The Benghazi tragedy hands Republicans a host of political opportunities, although none without complications. It may be difficult for average voters to sift through the chronology, assess blame, or even follow the logic of GOP arguments.

For instance, claims that Clinton and others ignored calls for greater diplomatic security in Libya might be linked to the four American deaths. But accusations about the post-attack talking points ? which sometimes seem to dominate the current debate ? have nothing to do with possibly preventing the deaths, thus robbing them of that moral heft.

Democrats note that a major independent inquiry into Benghazi, issued in December, found that the State Department badly mishandled security needs in Libya. But it blamed officials no higher than the assistant secretary of state level.

Republican strategist Kyle Downey said Benghazi already exposes a trove of Democratic vulnerabilities, which might grow as inquiries continue. He said Republicans should use the findings to challenge the competence, truthfulness and judgment of Clinton, Obama and other administration officials. Republicans, Downey said, should let the politics play out in terms of which charges gain the most traction.

Some strategists say the Benghazi narrative may prove more valuable for congressional Republicans in next year's elections than in 2016, which is far off. House Republicans, in particular, can seize on Benghazi to motivate their base and donors, and to fend off possible primary challenges from the right.

Democrats say Republicans are nakedly exploiting the Benghazi deaths, and voters won't like it.

"Republicans are a desperate party right now, trying to do whatever they can to dirty up the president to make some gains in 2014, and to dirty up Secretary Clinton because they're terrified she'll walk into the White House," said Democratic consultant Doug Thornell. "This is an attempt to keep their base together and motivated" after Obama's victories in 2008 and 2012.

Thornell predicted Benghazi will prove no more useful as a political "scandal" than did the highly criticized "Fast and Furious" gun-tracking program and the federally subsidized but ultimately doomed Solyndra energy company.

White House press secretary Jay Carney has spent hours trying to dismiss GOP accusations, including those that Obama sought to hide the fact that Islamic terrorists were behind the Benghazi attack. "The whole effort here by Republicans to find some hidden mystery comes to nothing because the president called it an act of terror," Carney told reporters Friday.

Benghazi may remain a white-hot topic in many conservative regions and talk shows for some time. At Wednesday's hearing before the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., told relatives of the four Americans killed in Benghazi that her constituents "think about you all the time."

A Simple Video Streaming Solution for Web Developers ? Internet

A Simple Video Streaming Solution for Web Developers

Since 2010 there has been a 470% increase in money being shifted from other collateral budgets to accommodate video as mobile video watching grows.

As a result of this many businesses are incorporating videos into their apps to help increase engagement with consumers. With mobile apps becoming integrated with everyday life, consumers rely on them for discounts, shopping lists and information on their favourite products and services.

This is good news for developers. One of the most popular requests that a developer currently receives is to publish video content into its clients` mobile applications. Many will enlist the help of their developer as the video file size needs to be reduced in order for it to upload quickly into the app and stream to a high quality.

This is easy to achieve within the G-box.tv video hosting platform.

Results

All the videos that the G-box.tv hosts and publishes will be encoded to the right size and format using the adaptive transcoding functionality developed within the service. This enables the videos to be converted to suit the specific device and bandwith characteristics.

All videos are optimised to the same quality across a broad range of mobile appliances. These are converted to suit the individual characteristics of the device and the software will render each video to the specific size of the screen of that device. All devices have been thoroughly tested to ensure quality video streaming.

Essentially this will allow all users to be able to play videos on their smartphone with the same high quality results. This is easy for developers to achieve as they can use the same embedded script for any application platform (Android, iOS, Blackberry).

Safety Regulators Close Probes into Ford, Chrysler Vehicles

U.S. auto safety regulators closed two separate probes into vehicles made by Ford Motor Co.2007FordFreestar and Chrysler Group LLC after the two U.S. automakers conducted safety recalls this year to fix glitches in some models.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closed both investigations in early May, according to documents filed on the agency?s website late on Tuesday.

In late 2011, NHTSA began exploring reports of corrosion problems in 200,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans made for the 2004 through 2007 model years.

In March, Ford recalled 230,000 minivans worldwide to repair the problem that could prevent the fold-down, third-row seats from locking in place. Ford?s recall affected 33,500 minivans outside the United States.

The second-largest U.S. automaker?s recall in the United States was confined to vehicles sold or registered in the 20 states and the District of Columbia, where road salt is used.

NHTSA said about 100,000 minivans outside these so-called ?salt belt? states were not included in the recall because they experience ?significantly lower failure rates.? But regulators added that they will monitor complaints of rust in those models.

In a separate filing, NHTSA said it also closed its probe of 115,000 Jeep Patriot SUVs made for the 2011 and 2012 model years after receiving complaints that the engines would stall while running at high speeds. The safety agency opened a preliminary evaluation into the issue in October 2012.

Chrysler found that the stalling engine issue was confined to a smaller group of vehicles equipped with a saddle type fuel tank made with malformed transfer tubes. The glitch was found in models built between October 2011 and May 2012.

Chrysler recalled about 30,000 model year 2012 Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs globally for the issue in April.

Both Ford and Chrysler said there were no accidents or injuries related to the problems. Chrysler is a unit of Italian automaker Fiat.

Invest in Africa, Zuma tells business

8 May 2013

President Jacob Zuma, addressing the South Africa-Nigeria Business Forum in Cape Town on Tuesday, encouraged South African companies to do more business in Nigeria and on the continent.

Zuma told the high-profile gathering of South African and Nigerian government and business leaders that the government had put a number of measures in place to support outward investments by local companies, including the relaxation of cross-border financial regulations and tax requirements.

Noting that similar measures applied to foreign companies wanting to invest in African countries using South Africa as their base, Zuma said the South African Reserve Bank had over the last few years approved nearly a thousand "large investments" into 36 African countries.

Tuesday's forum, hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry, coincided with the state visit of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, and also preceded Wednesday's opening of the World Economic Forum on Africa meeting in Cape Town.

Earlier on Tuesday, Jonathan and Zuma held talks in Cape Town, after which Nigeria and South Africa signed a raft of cooperation agreements.

Jonathan, also addressing the business forum, said it was imperative for Africa's two biggest economies to work together for the advancement of the continent.

Zuma echoed this, saying South Africa and Nigeria needed "to work together and complement each other, to push an African agenda which puts regional economic integration, economic and infrastructural development at the forefront.

"Already, the economic linkages are encouraging," Zuma said, with over 100 South African companies currently doing business in Nigeria, and a number of Nigerian companies having shown "keen interest" in investing in South Africa.

The two countries set up a bi-national commission in 1999, at the same time signing a bilateral trade agreement and a promotion and protection of investment agreement.

Zuma told the forum that Jonathan's visit, and the World Economic Forum on Africa meeting, both came at a time when the outlook for the continent was highly positive.

"Over the last decade, six of the world's 10 fastest growing economies were in Africa," Zuma said, and sub-Saharan Africa, with an expected annual growth of five percent, was projected to continue its move from a developing region to a hub of global growth.

The process of establishing a continental free trade area - bringing together the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, the Southern African Development Community and the East African Community - "should encourage the business sector to look even more favourably within the continent for investments", Zuma said.

"This will be Africa's biggest free trade bloc, with a single continent-wide market estimated to be worth a trillion US dollars. The 26 African countries involved have an aggregate GDP of $860-billion and a combined population of 600 million people."

South Africa and Nigeria had to ensure that their economic success "contributes visibly to the ultimate goal of a successful and prosperous continent," Zuma said.

"As the business community in the two countries, you have our full support. We urge you to invest in the continent, and more directly, in South Africa and Nigeria, and boost African growth and development while obtaining returns on your investment."
