Bill Cosby muses on life in latest book (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Media icon Bill Cosby at 74 still looms larger than life over the American psyche.

Emerging from a Philadelphia housing project, ultimately success followed success as a comedian, actor, producer, author, educator, musician and activist.

Breaking U.S. television's racial barrier with "I Spy" as the first African American to costar on a television series in the 1960s, he won three consecutive Emmys. Later he enjoyed even more success as Cliff Huxtable on one of the defining TV sitcoms of the 1980s, "The Cosby Show".

In his book, "I DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN (But I'm Glad I Was)," Cosby reveals more of the anecdotes and musings on the human condition that have made him a global name.

What is it to be normal, a husband, a father, a grandfather or just a man in today's America?

"The mind still clicks on things I think and see as interesting and funny and I write it," said Cosby.

Describing the voice mail hell known to everyone globally with a phone, Cosby writes the self evident truth. "You see, that's the problem with technology. You can have a conversation with a person who isn't a person. And be interviewed by a friend of yours who isn't there."

Commenting on the state of television advertising he recounts his wife's wisdom on erectile dysfunction commercials.

"It's not nice to talk about the living dead."

And if Native Americans had known then what they know now, Cosby is certain they would have used slot machines and casinos to bankrupt the early European settlers rather than fight a losing war.

Moving from topic to topic, he reveals the answer to a child's defiant declaration: "I didn't ask to be born."

Along the way, the reader gets a glimpse of Cosby the man and perhaps some of the defining events of his life.

Cosby writes about his upbringing, his success. He mentions, in passing, his alcoholic father.

"I don't want people to think he was anything other than what he was at the time," said Cosby of his father. "It's the truth. I want to say it because it's the truth."

Cosby retains a jovial love of people and the personal standards that set him apart from many of his peers in comedy. He long ago disavowed profanity, sexual innuendo or citing race for audience amusement.

"I still enjoy going out and having something to connect with and doing it without the profanity," he explained. "I stayed with what I felt to be a great philosophy."

Cosby is also relevant to today's generation, including QR, or Quick Response codes, the series of squares, lines and dots scanned by smart phones, at the end of each chapter.

"I have to acknowledge my eight-, nine- and six-year-old grandchildren," said Cosby. "These are the things to get to these people."

Married for 48 years Cosby lives in Shelburne, Massachusetts, a far cry from the neighborhood where he grew up and a place he describes in some detail early in the book. A place where he and his friends played softball on a tar and gravel lot, mixed with broken glass, and skate boards were cobbled together from a piece of wood and street skates.

But even in moving from that place to another, Cosby makes clear in his writing that he still finds inspiration in one of life's simple pleasures, "the joy of being with human beings you call your friends."

Kobe goes for 40-plus again as Lakers beat Cavs (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Kobe Bryant scored 42 points in his third straight 40-point performance, and the Los Angeles Lakers blew a big early lead before hanging on for their fifth straight victory, 97-92 over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.

Pau Gasol had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who won their eighth consecutive game at Staples Center since Christmas. Until Bryant took charge, Los Angeles allowed a 19-point lead to dwindle to three in the final minutes of coach Mike Brown's first meeting with the Cavaliers since they fired him in 2010.

Bryant managed just seven points in the fourth quarter but hit two big jumpers down the stretch, giving him three straight 40-point games for the first time since March 2007, when he had five straight. Kobe is third in NBA history with 110 40-point games, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan.

Kyrie Irving scored 21 points and Ramon Sessions added 12 for the Cavaliers, who have played eight of their first 11 games on the road. Cleveland foundered in the first half before rallying impressively in the second half, avoiding anything close to the embarrassment of last season's 112-57 debacle at Staples Center.

Bryant added another remarkable performance to his early season tear, with the 13-time All-Star showing the flair and determination of his best seasons. Playing through a torn wrist ligament that has visibly swollen his right hand, Kobe has scored at least 30 points in seven of his last eight games.

Andrew Bynum had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Matt Barnes added 15 points for the Lakers, who finished the first half with an 18-3 run for an 18-point halftime lead. Los Angeles led by 12 points heading to the fourth quarter, but missed its first eight shots and failed to score for more than six minutes, allowing the Cavaliers to pull within three points.

The Lakers missed 11 of their first 12 shots in the fourth before Bryant's 18-footer with 4:02 to play. Just seven players scored for the Lakers, with just four managing more than three points.

Los Angeles played without backup point guard Steve Blake, who has broken cartilage in his ribs. During the fourth quarter, the Lakers announced Blake will be sidelined three to four weeks.

Derek Fisher had 10 assists for the Lakers, getting double-digit assists for just the 15th time in the point guard's 16-year career. Rookie Darius Morris also played 17 minutes in his second career game.

Before the game, Brown insisted he harbors no bitterness toward the Cavaliers or owner Dan Gilbert, who fired him after an otherwise incredibly successful five-year tenure ended without a championship. Brown went 272-138 at the helm of LeBron James' Cavs, who won at least one playoff round every year and reached the NBA finals in 2007.

"If I was back in Cleveland, it would be a little different," Brown said of his reunion game. "But a lot of faces on that team have changed."

Brown remains grateful to Gilbert for his first chance to be a head coach, and he took zero satisfaction in the Cavs' total collapse after he left. Cleveland won 19 games last season and is trying to rebuild behind No. 1 pick Irving.

NOTES: Metta World Peace didn't play for the Lakers. The team said the veteran forward is struggling with back spasms and an Achilles' tendon problem, although he wasn't listed on the pregame injury report. ... Lakers F Josh McRoberts returned from a six-game absence with a sprained big toe, but played just 4 first-half minutes. F Troy Murphy also returned from an illness, and Jason Kapono returned from a two-game absence while his wife gave birth to twins. ... Fans included Adam Sandler, Tobey Maguire, Joe Walsh, A.C. Green and three-time U.S. Olympic boxer Rau'Shee Warren.

Huntsman looks for independent rise

(AP) ? No group will shape Jon Huntsman's political future more than New Hampshire's independents.

Notoriously late to decide and difficult to poll, roughly 40 percent of the state's voters is not registered with any party. And election law gives them a prominent role in Tuesday's Republican presidential primary, a contest in which Huntsman has staked his candidacy on a top-three finish.

The former Utah governor, unsuccessful in a months-long appeal to traditional conservatives, recently shifted strategy to make an aggressive play for independents. What he says and where he says it now suggests he thinks he's found a path to relevancy in the race for the GOP nomination.

The message was on display Sunday as Huntsman struck a distinctly moderate tone during a nationally televised debate while rebutting rival Mitt Romney's criticism of Huntsman's role as ambassador to China in the Obama administration.

"He criticized me while he was out raising money, for serving my country in China, yes under a Democrat, like my two sons are doing in the United States Navy," Huntsman said. "I want to be very clear with the people here in New Hampshire and in this country. I will always put my country first."

Romney, the New Hampshire front-runner, countered that the Republican who stands against Obama in November shouldn't be someone who served him as ambassador to China.

Huntsman followed up: "This nation is divided ... because of attitudes just like that."

While Huntsman may be a factor Tuesday, any strategy that depends upon the independent vote is risky at best.

Romney and Ron Paul, the libertarian-minded Texas congressman, have support among unaffiliated voters as well. But it would be a mistake to assume that all unaffiliated voters here are moderates or pure political centrists. Many simply don't like party labels.

A sampling of the audience at a recent Romney event in Salem turned up unaffiliated voters who leaned toward Romney, Huntsman, Paul, and even Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator whose political career has been driven by social conservatism ? hardly a priority for the stereotypical independent.

Cindy Goucher, 42, an unaffiliated voter from Derry, said she liked Romney and Huntsman.

"I'm more of a moderate," she said, noting her interest in candidates who are more willing to compromise. "I think as Americans, we all need to work together and be flexible, work as a team."

Huntsman will need a lot of people like Cindy Goucher to vote Tuesday ? and to vote for him instead of Romney.

Huntsman unveiled signs bearing a new campaign slogan late Monday ? "Country First" ? borrowing a phrase from one of New Hampshire's favorite independent-minded presidential contenders, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Romney, too, has an aggressive strategy to win over independents that includes mass mailings and holding events in independent strongholds in the southern part of the state, according to adviser Tom Rath.

Huntsman has intensified his attacks on Romney in recent days during campaign stops in moderate strongholds along the seacoast and western part of the state. An outside group, Our Destiny PAC, run by his allies is already running anti-Romney ads across New Hampshire and will expand the advertising campaign this week to South Carolina, which holds the next Republican primary on Jan. 21.

Romney's poll numbers appear to have fallen slightly amid attacks from virtually all his rivals, but he still held a commanding lead heading into Tuesday's voting. Huntsman's numbers, which hovered in single digits for months, have begun to show a moderate rise.

Huntsman received more good news Monday when former state GOP chairman Fergus Cullen greeted him outside a bakery in Dover.

Cullen said only Huntsman or Romney could beat Obama, but that he had decided to support Huntsman for his experience and temperament.

"I like that he's a positive person," Cullen said. "He's not angry. ... The party can't give in to its anger."

The stakes are high for Huntsman Tuesday. He doesn't need to win, but will struggle to stay in the race if he finishes outside the top three.

"I don't think that would be in the realm of beating market expectations," he told The Associated Press recently when asked about a below-third finish.

He planned to spend Wednesday campaigning in South Carolina.

Company announces low-cost DNA decoding machine (AP)

NEW YORK ? A biotechnology company announced it has developed a machine to decode an individual's DNA in a day for $1,000, a long-sought price goal for making the genome useful for medical care.

Life Technologies Corp. said Tuesday it was taking orders for the technology, which it expects to deliver in about a year. The Carlsbad, Calif., company said three major research institutions had already signed up for the $149,000 machine: the Baylor College of Medicine, the Yale School of Medicine and the Broad Institute of Cambridge, Mass.

A second company, Illumina of San Diego, also introduced a new technology Tuesday that it said will decode an entire genome in about 24 hours. Its statement did not estimate the cost per genome.

The machines, called sequencers, allow scientists to identify the arrangement of the 3 billion chemical building blocks that make up someone's DNA.

Since the first sequencing of the basic human genome was announced at the White House in 2000, the costs of sequencing DNA have steadily tumbled. The $1,000 target has long been cited as a key step toward making the technique practical for doctors to use to help their patients, such as for revealing vulnerabilities to certain diseases or tailoring medical treatment.

Sequencing whole genomes is now done primarily for research. It's different from the service some companies offer to consumers that cover just part of the genome or particular spots in it, such as for information on ancestry or disease susceptibility.

The $1,000 cost for a whole genome is about the same as many of today's lab tests, said Chad Nussbaum, co-director of the Genome Sequencing and Analysis Program at the Broad Institute. Tuesday's announcement is "bringing the DNA sequence closer" to being affordable and fast enough for doctors to use, Nussbaum said. If the machine works as expected, a doctor might send a patient's DNA to a lab and get useful information back in about a week, he said.

Whether genomes from the new machine will actually cost exactly $1,000 will depend on how one calculates that figure, Nussbaum said. But even if it's just in the neighborhood, the technology could become widely adopted by doctors, he said.

Richard Gibbs, who directs the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor, said, "We will see if the machines really perform as well as described" in terms of cost and accuracy. "We're optimistic."

Nussbaum emphasized that uncovering a deluge of DNA data about a patient is one thing, and being able to analyze it for useful information is quite another.

"You've got to glean the news out of the genome and you've got to give it to the doctor in a usable way," he said. The ability to do that analysis is still "a developing story," he said.

In the shorter term, the relatively low cost of the machine itself is important because it will let more research laboratories get into DNA sequencing, Nussbaum said.

Shares of Life Technologies closed Tuesday at $46.17, up 8.3 percent.
